Luke Littler will not be competing in the 29th and 30th Players Championships in Den Bosch, and he is no longer the only major name missing. The initial news, reported by Sky Sports, comes less than twenty-four hours after his 10-4 defeat to Jonny Clayton in the quarter-finals of the World Series of Darts Finals.
This withdrawal is not just another absence from the ProTour. It has a direct impact on the race for the Players Championship Finals in Minehead this November, where only the top 64 in the dedicated rankings secure their places. According to Sky Sports, Littler is currently ranked 125th in this points table, £16,750 behind the final qualifying spot.
A withdrawal that changes the outlook for the rest of his season
The PDC has confirmed that Players Championships 29 and 30 will take place in Den Bosch, the Netherlands, on 22 and 23 September. This double-header was set to offer Littler a chance to rack up points quickly, following a nervy start to the series.
The timing makes the decision all the more significant. Littler is coming off the back of a weekend in which his dream of sweeping all the major PDC titles of the season came to an end. Jonny Clayton brought him to a sudden halt in Amsterdam, following a quarter-final that shattered a run of form that had, until then, seemed almost unreal. This is no longer just a gap in the calendar: it is a real turning point in his end-of-season strategy.
The situation also serves as a reminder that the ProTour offers no mercy for slumps. Back in August, his run towards Minehead had already been halted by Jermaine Wattimena at Players Championship 27. A month later, the two Dutch events could have served as a chance to make up lost ground. Without them, the margin is becoming very slim.
Price and Wade also withdraw from the double-header
Update, 22 September: the Den Bosch field has been weakened further. DartsNews reports that Gerwyn Price and James Wade, who were both named on the initial entry list, have also withdrawn from Players Championships 29 and 30.
This is no longer only a Littler story. The Maaspoort double-header has now lost three major names, just as the PDC is tracking a key day in the race for the Players Championship Finals. The absence of Price and Wade does not change Littler’s Minehead problem, but it does change the shape of the field: Den Bosch still matters in the standings, only with fewer headline names than expected.
Den Bosch without Littler, but with real stakes in the standings
Players Championships 29 and 30 remain important even without the circuit’s most popular headliner. The PDC has presented these two tournaments as a key stage in the ProTour’s return, with a direct impact on qualification for Minehead. The next real answer will now come from the calendar. If Littler returns quickly to the ProTour, the story remains open. If he prioritises the televised majors, this absence from Den Bosch could well be remembered as the moment when Minehead truly slipped out of reach.
