Fred Krueger has just turned a fine North American season into a real race to Ally Pally. Winner of the Cosmo Darts Championship in Oakbrook Terrace, the American has clinched his third CDC title of 2026 and now finds himself in a strong position in the battle for qualification for the PDC World Championship.
This is not just another victory on the regional circuit. According to the official round-up published by the PDC, Krueger has overtaken Leonard Gates in the CDC rankings and is provisionally the highest-ranked American not yet qualified for London. Following Adam Sevada’s victory at Oakbrook in late August, the North American race has therefore taken a different turn for the second time in three weeks.
Krueger wins at Oakbrook and reshapes the CDC rankings
The Championship Darts Corporation held another leg of its Main Tour in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Saturday’s tournament went to Krueger, the 14th seed, following a run that carries more weight than the final score alone.
In the quarter-finals, he first dominated Doug Boehm 6–1. In the semi-finals, he had to adopt a different approach against Joey Lynaugh, defeating him 7-6 after a real battle of wills. Then the final provided clearer confirmation: Krueger 7-4 Alex Spellman, with the last two legs in the bag to seal the victory at just the right moment.
The CDC also emphasises the significance of the result. With this victory, Krueger moves ahead of Gates and sits behind Sevada in the 2026 rankings. However, Sevada has already secured his place at the World Championship via the North American Championship. Under the qualification system, this opens up a very real opportunity for Krueger, provided he maintains his position across the five remaining events.

Why this third title matters more than the first two
The first title puts a player in the mix. The third forces us to view him in a different light. Krueger is no longer just the man who had a good CDC weekend: he is stringing together enough results to carry weight in a race where every stage can shake up the standings for London.
This distinction is important, because the North American circuit is not merely a contest between big names. Leonard Gates retains his historical standing. Adam Sevada has already made a strong impression in 2026, notably with his North American title. David Cameron has also qualified on the Canadian side. Against this backdrop, Krueger needed to do more than just hold his position. He needed to make up ground at a time when the calendar is getting tighter.
That is exactly what Oakbrook shows. The match against Lynaugh demonstrates that he survived the game that could have knocked him out. The final against Spellman shows that he then retained enough composure to seal the win. On a circuit where margins are often narrow, this sort of run counts for just as much as the gross average.
An American race still wide open heading into the home straight
Krueger is now in a strong position, but nothing is over yet. There are five CDC events left before the end of the race, and missing out on even one quarter-final could open the door again to Gates or another challenger. The good news for Krueger is that he no longer needs to simply hope for others to slip up. For now, he’s in the driving seat.
What matters most is the message this sends ahead of the World Championship. International qualifiers often produce some dramatic stories at Ally Pally, as they bring lesser-known players up against the toughest PDC competition. Krueger had already shown promise back in July. With this third title, he has turned that promise into a serious contender.
