How to Hang a Dartboard: Complete Setup Guide

How to Hang a Dartboard: Complete Setup Guide

After purchasing an electronic dartboard or a traditional dart set, comes the moment of installation with that simple question: "How do I hang my dartboard?".

In this article, we answer all your questions about how to fix your dartboard to a wall, what equipment is needed, whether you need to drill into the wall, and at what height and distance to mount the dartboard.

Let us take things in chronological order.

Find the right location for a dartboard

First, you need to determine where to put the dartboard so you can use it properly.

To do this, you need to find and define a space that meets the regulation height and distance for darts:

  • Height: The centre of the board must be 173 cm above the floor.
  • Distance: The oche (throwing line) must be 237 cm away (traditional board) or 244 cm (electronic board).

You can find the steps to determine the correct distance and height for your dartboard in our dedicated article.

Also make sure you have enough space around the board to add a dartboard wall protector. This will help prevent damage to your wall when you need to finish a 501 on a double!

Equipment to mount a dartboard

The equipment needed to fix a dartboard to a wall is as follows:

  • 📏 1 measuring tape of at least 3 metres.
  • 🖊️ 1 pencil / marker / pen.
  • 🔨 1 small hammer.
  • 🪛 1 small crosshead screwdriver.
  • ✂️ 1 knife or 1 pair of scissors.

With these tools, you will be able to hang a traditional or electronic dartboard without any trouble.

Hang a dartboard step by step

Now that you have defined the playing area, chosen the wall to fix the board to, and gathered the right tools, let us look at how to hang a dartboard on a wall.

  1. Unpack the dartboard packaging to retrieve the fixings.
  2. Get the instructions and check that all parts are present.
  3. Place the front face of the board flat on a table.
  4. Position the 3 rubber mounts on the marks located around the edge of the board.
  5. Using the hammer, tap the 3 nails into the mounts to secure them.
  6. Using the screwdriver, screw the bracket halfway in at the mark in the centre of the board.
  7. Using the tape measure and pen, make a mark on the wall at 173 cm.
  8. Fix the metal mounting bracket at this mark.
  9. Screw the two screws into the bracket and the wall.
  10. Hang your board, with the 20 at the top, by sliding it onto the metal plate.

Congratulations, your dartboard is now fixed to the wall and you can start enjoying it!

Hang a dartboard without drilling

If you would like to hang a dartboard without drilling, you can do so using double-sided adhesive tape. These adhesive strips are capable of holding several kilograms, so they can allow you to fix your board without drilling into the wall.

Traditional dartboard:

  1. Place the front face of the board flat on a table.
  2. Apply the double-sided tape to the centre of the board, along its length and width (in a cross shape).
  3. Add several vertical strips along the sides to increase the adhesive surface area.
  4. Hang your board 173 cm above the floor with the 20 at the top.

Electronic dartboard:

  1. Place the front face of the board flat on a table.
  2. Apply the adhesive strip around the perimeter of the board (in a rectangle shape).
  3. Add several vertical strips in the centre to increase the adhesive surface area.
  4. Hang your board 173 cm above the floor with the 20 at the top.

In this way, you should be able to secure your board firmly without damaging your wall.

Protecting your wall from a dartboard

The last step to follow when hanging a traditional dartboard is fitting a dartboard surround ring. Very useful for protecting the area around the board from stray dart throws that miss the target.

You can purchase a Canaveral dartboard surround or a Winmau Surround Pro-line Blade 6 if you want to create a professional darts setup. Alternatively, you can also place a cork board all around the dartboard.

Bear in mind, however, that with a cork board, your steel-tip darts will undoubtedly pierce through the protection and damage your wall. You will therefore need to use several layers or opt for a dedicated dartboard wall protector, which are generally considerably thicker.
